Bioluminescent Algae Exploration
This project investigates the potential of bioluminescent algae as a sustainable lighting solution for both residential and commercial environments. Bioluminescent algae are living organisms that photosynthesize during the day and emit a natural glow when agitated at night, offering a unique and eco-friendly light source. For residential use, I designed a pendulum chandelier that gently swings to stimulate the algae, creating an ambient glow. In commercial spaces, I developed a low-power safety lighting system where algae are circulated through pipes in stairwells, illuminating pathways to ensure safe exits during emergencies.
Initial Sketches & Brainstorming
In order to work with the algae and present my project during the day I needed to reverse the circadian rhythm by creating an artificial environment where it was light during the night and dark during the day. For this I created this box with a timed light, insulation to keep the algae warm
